The multitude of employment relationships and the diversity of national laws governing working conditions have led the European Union to improve the protection of employees against potential violations of their rights. For this reason, the European Union, through Directive 91/533/EEC, established the obligation of employers to provide each employee with a document containing information regarding the essential elements of their employment contract or employment relationship.
